Duke Energy, the EQuIPD Grant, the University of Florida, and Orange County Public Schools are partnering to host a student AI design contest across multiple school districts in Florida: Alachua, Orange, Hillsborough, and Pinellas counties.
Fifty to sixty high school students will be challenged to create a system to decide the prioritization of power distribution in the event of an emergency. Student groups of 4 students will analyze power distribution data, maps, and their local communities to create a system for prioritization. Student groups will frequently meet with near-peer industry or college mentors to ensure their design teams and projects are ready to submit for contest checkpoints. The design contest is designed to build the computational thinking skills required to program a computer to make an intelligent decision.
